What is RO membrane filtration?

RO water filtration membrane, also known as ultrafiltration membrane, has super small filtering slots, only 0.0001 micron. Thanks to that, it helps remove pollutants, bacteria, and harmful chemicals in water. As a result, it ensures that the output water source is highly pure, allowing users to drink directly without the need to boil it again.

The structure of RO membrane filtration in water treatment is quite simple, divided into 3 main parts as follows:

The outer surface of the RO membrane is made up of super thin protective plastic layers that tightly seal the membrane and the inner cushion layer. This helps secure the membrane to ensure the water filtration efficiency of the device.

Middle part of RO membrane

The middle part of the RO membrane is made up of multiple RO filter sheets. They are stacked and rolled around a central tube in a spiral shape.

Each sheet is equivalent to 3 layers, including: polyester fabric, a 0.2-micrometer thick polyamide filter layer, and polysulfone foam. Among them, the polysulfone foam layer has a high water filtration capacity. It helps remove impurities, chemicals, bacteria, viruses, and harmful substances from the water source.

Between the RO filter sheets, a cushion layer is added to create a certain space for water to flow through.

Central core

The central core, also known as the central water guide tube, contains a series of small tiny holes that allow water to permeate through the membrane and produce pure clean water.

Functions of RO membrane filtration

• RO membrane filtration has a system of super small filter pores with a size of only 0.0001 micrometers, allowing only pure water to pass through. Solid dissolved substances, suspended solids, colloids, viruses, bacteria, metal ions, chemicals, residual pesticides will be blocked and discharged through the wastewater.
• The water source after passing through the RO membrane is pure.
• Provides safe, non-toxic, colorless, odorless, tasteless water.
• The water after passing through the RO membrane can be consumed directly or used for cooking, washing fruits, making milk, etc.

Principle of operation of the RO membrane

RO membrane operates on the principle of reverse osmosis. That is, the operation process of the membrane is completely different from the normal osmosis mechanism. Specifically as follows:

1. Thanks to the compression pressure of the pump to move water molecules. The pump creates strong thrust to push water through the membranes.
2. RO membrane has super small size, so only water molecules can pass through. Pollutants in the water will be pushed to the low-pressure area and flow out with the waste stream.
3. Therefore, the water flow into the RO membrane usually has high pressure due to the pump's action. The water is brought into the membrane in a spiral shape. The clean water that passes through will move to the lower layer and concentrate in the water guide tube and then flow out.
4. Thanks to the cushion system between the filter sheets, the water flowing into the RO membrane is more uniform and stable.
