The washing efficiency of chemical detergents is reduced when they are dissolved in hard water. This is because the hardness-causing agents in water (calcium salts, magnesium carbonate) interact with the surfactants in the detergent, affecting their ability to reduce surface tension in water and leading to lower effectiveness in removing and dissolving stains.

Furthermore, these agents tend to react with the detergent to form carbonate or sulfate salts that precipitate and deposit on the surface of the laundry, reducing brightness and causing discoloration, yellowing, and dullness. Hardness agents can also reduce the softening effect of the laundry and sometimes result in unpleasant odors.

In addition, operating in hard water conditions increases equipment maintenance costs as regular cleaning is required to remove hard deposits in the washing machine. In very hard water conditions, water softening equipment must be used to ensure the quality of customer laundry and protect the durability of the equipment.
