Instructions on Treating Water with Alum in a Very Simple Way

Basically, treating water with alum is very easy and does not require the use of many supporting tools. This method is suitable for household scale or small collective areas with few people.

Preparing materials for treating water with alum

Preparation

  • Alum.
  • Water to be treated.
  • Containers such as buckets, basins, or bottles.
  • Stirring utensils.

Procedure

  • For every 20 liters of water, you need 1g of alum.
  • From the above formula, you can calculate the amount of alum needed. Take that amount of alum, dissolve it in a small amount of water, and stir until the alum is completely dissolved in the water.
  • Pour this mixture into the water source that needs to be treated and stir well.
  • Wait for about 30 minutes, and the dirt particles will quickly settle at the bottom of the container.

At that point, you can drain or scoop the water from the top into another container for daily use.

Operating Mechanism of Alum in Water Treatment

Alum is a double sulfate salt of potassium and aluminum (K2SO4.Al2(SO4)3.24H2O). They have non-toxic properties, are easily soluble in water, especially in hot water.

When alum is added to water, it dissociates into Al3+ ions. This ion undergoes hydrolysis according to the equation: Al3+ + 3H2O → Al(OH)3↓ + 3H+. As a result, the precipitate Al(OH)3 is formed.

Treating water with alum

Alum effectively resolves the problem of turbid water. Therefore, it is suitable for treating water for daily use and sanitation purposes.

Notes on Treating Water with Alum

  • For well water, the recommended alum dosage for water purification is 50g/1m3 of water.
  • If the water source is highly turbid, it is advisable to pre-filter using methods such as using cloth screens... This will significantly improve the effectiveness of treating water with alum.
  • Generally, this method is considered relatively safe. However, it is not recommended to use directly. It is best to disinfect the water with chemicals or boil it to ensure health safety.
  • In addition to alum, you can also disinfect water with Cloramin B, packaged in powder or tablet form for water disinfection at a ratio of 0.25mg Cloramin B per 25 liters of water. However, the water needs to be boiled again before consumption.
  • Do not combine alum with Cloramin B as alum will reduce the effectiveness of Cloramin B.
  • The best way to treat household water is to install a modern water filtration system to maintain clean water daily or use a water filter machine.

Above is the method of treating water with alum. We hope the information provided has helped you understand more about this method and apply it correctly to achieve the highest efficiency.
